The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
